Clitoral hood reduction

Clitoral hood reduction is a female intimate surgery procedure.

Clitoral hood reduction is also called clitoral deflation.

The clitoris is an erectile organ (corpus cavernosum) whose stimulation provides sexual pleasure. The glans of the clitoris is the visible part of this organ which is in fact much longer.

This glans is covered by an equivalent of the foreskin: the clitoral hood, which is a fold of mucous membrane and skin covering the clitoral glans. Some women have an enlargement (an excess) of this mucous membrane and wish to undergo surgery.

This excess of mucous membrane covering the clitoris can interfere with clitoral stimulation and have an impact on sexual pleasure. Clitoral hood reduction can help women who complain of this excess and a lack of sexual pleasure from clitoral stimulation. The concept is to expose more surface area of the clitoris to allow more stimulation.

This medical information sheet was written in July 2020 by Dr ABBOU and Dr PESSIS who are plastic surgeons in Paris.

What is clitoral hood reduction?

Clitoral hood reduction involves reducing the hood of skin surrounding the clitoris, exposing the glans (or head) of the clitoris below. It is a common procedure in intimate surgery.

What are the objectives of the clitoral hood reduction surgery?

Clitoral hood reduction surgery aims to further stimulate female pleasure through clitoral stimulation in order to achieve a clitoral orgasm. It also has an aesthetic purpose to improve the appearance of the vulva, which in some cases is covered by a hypertrophic and unsightly clitoral hood.

Who is it for?

Clitoral hood reduction is intended for patients who :

  • Have a large fold of skin and mucous membrane covering the clitoris
  • Do not like the aesthetic aspect of their vulva
  • Have diminished sensations during sexual relations because of the lack of sensitivity of the clitoris
  • Have friction and pain during sex.

What is the procedure?

Before the operation

  • Medical consultation for cosmetic surgery
  • Anesthesia consultation if general anesthesia
  • Pre-operative blood test
  • Smoking cessation

Course of the intervention

The procedure takes place in the operating room under local anesthesia or general anesthesia depending on the patient’s desire.

The procedure to reduce the clitoral hood is an outpatient procedure (same day discharge) where the surgeon removes the excess skin tissue to allow better stimulation of the clitoris and beautify the female sexual organs.

The clitoris is covered with a hood (which is similar to a man’s foreskin). The surgeon reduces the excess skin over the clitoris.

Post-operative care

An enlarged clitoral hood is often observed in women who also have labial hypertrophy or excess labia minora when their tissue hangs below the vulva. In these circumstances, a nymphoplasty can often be performed at the same time.

After the reduction of the clitoral hood, there may be a small amount of bleeding for 2 to 3 days and swelling and bruising for an average of 7 days.

The post-operative period is generally not very painful, requiring only simple painkillers.

After the operation, we advise you to wear loose clothing (skirt or loose pants). A very soft hair dryer is preferred for drying the area. We recommend waiting three to four weeks before gradually resuming sexual activity.

The result will be evaluated three months after the operation.
