Radiofrequency to treat sagging skin

Radiofrequency is an aesthetic medicine treatment that treats sagging skin and wrinkles on the face and body.

Radiofrequency treatment promotes the production of new collagen and elastin fibers by increasing thermogenesis or heat (increase in temperature above 44 degrees Celsius) within targeted tissues in the superficial layers of the skin.

This is how radiofrequency works when used to reduce cellulite, reshape the figure, improve the texture and tone of the skin of the face and body to obtain firm skin, improve the oval of the face, treat wrinkles on the neck and décolleté.

Radiofrequency is very beneficial after liposuction to reduce postoperative edema and improve skin quality.

Fractional radiofrequency treatments take place in the doctor’s office and can be combined with hyaluronic acid injections, HIFU focused ultrasound, and peeling.

This medical information sheet was written in July 2021 by Dr. ABBOU and Dr. PESSIS who are two cosmetic surgeons in Paris.

What is radiofrequency?

Radiofrequency treatment is an aesthetic medicine treatment used to firm up the face, upper eyelids, neck, décolleté and reshape the figure, particularly the arms, thighs, buttocks, abdomen and flanks.

Radiofrequency is often used to optimize the result of a face lift or liposuction because it allows for better skin tension.

What are the objectives of radiofrequency?

  • Treatment of sagging skin
  • Improved results after liposuction: improvement of skin tension and disappearance of postoperative oedema
  • An improvement in the quality of the skin
  • A decrease in fine lines and wrinkling of the skin
  • Tightening of pores and reduction of acne scars
  • An even, younger-looking complexion
  • Reduction of subcutaneous fat

Who can benefit from radiofrequency?

Radiofrequency is for patients who want to improve the appearance of their skin and treat wrinkles on the face and body without surgery or injections and with very simple aftercare. Radiofrequency improves the quality of the skin and treats sagging skin in all patients.

How does a medical radiofrequency session work?

Before treatment

  •
  • Medical consultation with your cosmetic surgeon
  • Definition of a treatment plan adapted to your case.

Course of treatment

A radiofrequency session takes place in the doctor’s office and lasts from 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the extent of the areas treated. The treatment may cause a tingling sensation and heat on the skin, which is well tolerated with the use of a cooler. Medical radiofrequency does not require local anesthesia.

Les suites

After the treatment, the skin may be red and slightly swollen for a few hours only. A post-treatment cream will be recommended before you leave the clinic. Normal skin care and make-up can be resumed the next day.

The suggested number of sessions for the face and neck is five to six treatments. For the body, eight to ten treatments will be necessary.

It is possible to observe a transient erythema (redness) that can last from a few minutes to a few hours. A warmth may be felt on the skin immediately after the treatment, but it will dissipate quickly. If you have been treated on the lower face or chin, this area may remain tender for a few hours or at most a day after treatment. Treatment of the eyes may result in transient swelling; we suggest that you sleep with your head elevated for 24 hours after treatment.

Ultimately, the skin becomes more toned and rejuvenated in the weeks and months following the treatment.

After radiofrequency, the changes are reflected in:

  • skin rejuvenation
  • skin firming
  • a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles
  • tightening of the skin texture
  • a smoother and younger look.

The treatment series also improves surface acne scars and effectively treats hyperpigmentation and melasma.
