Cosmetic surgery for dark circles

The treatment of dark circles is a cosmetic surgery of the eyes and eyes and aesthetic medicine of the face.

What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty refers to surgery that is designed to remove excess fat and skin from the upper and lower eyelids

It can involve the upper or lower eyelids, or all four at once. It can be performed alone or in combination with another facial cosmetic surgery procedure (brow lift, temporal lift, cervico-facial lift). It can also be associated with a medical aesthetic treatment (peeling, dermabrasion) to treat them.

This surgery helps to reduce the signs of aging present on the eyelids and to replace the “tired” look of the eyes with a more rested and relaxed appearance. In particular, it opens up the eyes.

First of all, heavy and drooping upper eyelids, with an excess of skin that forms a fold above the lashes.
Then the lower eyelids sag and wither with small horizontal wrinkles. This withered appearance ages the face.
Finally, fat hernias on the lower part of the face are responsible for “bags under the eyes”. These bags make the face look tired at any time of the day.

What are the objectives ?

Blepharoplasty can correct drooping eyelids that can hang down and interfere with peripheral vision. By removing excess wrinkled skin, it “opens” the eyes and gives the face a fresher, brighter, more youthful and rested appearance. During the surgery, pockets of fat are removed, as well as a minimal amount of skin.

Who is it for ?

A natural part of the aging process is the appearance of wrinkles, often around the eyes. The skin around the eyes also becomes less elastic, resulting in drooping eyelids. Sometimes this happens at an early age. If you have these symptoms or simply don’t like the way they look, you may be a candidate for blepharoplasty.

Process of the operation

Blepharoplasty is performed in the operating room under local anesthesia and lasts an average of one hour. If you prefer a non-surgical treatment using hyaluronic acid injections, the treatment takes place in the doctor’s office.

Post-operative care

The aftermath of the surgical blepharoplasty is not painful, but you will experience moderate discomfort for a few days as well as bruising and swelling.

The questions most often asked by patients

What is the right age to have eyelid surgery?

There is no correct age for eyelid surgery. Excessive skin in the upper eyelids or fatty bags in the lower eyelids are often the first signs of facial aging. If you are in good health without serious eye problems, your age should not prevent you from benefiting from this procedure.

Can surgery be a medical necessity?

If the drooping of your eyelids interferes with your field of vision, the blepharoplasty procedure may be considered “medically necessary” surgery.

Prior to surgery, your ophthalmologist will perform:

First, a complete eye examination.
Then a visual field examination to determine the extent to which the upper eyelid interferes with your vision.

For the lower ones, there is no coverage by the health insurance except in case of trauma or cancer.

How to choose between blepharoplasty or eyebrow lift?

When someone complains of drooping upper eyelids, the first thing we do is assess whether the problem is excess skin, or if the eyebrows have drooped over time.

If the eyebrows are in good position, we can perform surgery to remove the excess skin. If the eyebrows are particularly low, the doctor manually lifts the skin of the patient’s forehead to an appropriate level. If most of the skin on the upper eyelid is missing, the patient will most likely benefit from a forehead lift or a temporal lift.

Can surgery eliminate wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet)?

No, blepharoplasty will not be able to achieve all of this. When the skin is tightened, many wrinkles disappear. Dark circles under the eyes may improve a little if this is related to fatty bags, but more often than not, the dark appearance of the skin on the lower eyelid remains. It can be combined with dark circle lipofilling and micro lipofilling or nano lipofilling to address all these specific requests.

How are the pockets that make me look tired treated?

The fat pockets are removed without scarring from the inside of the lower eyelid. Upper and lower eyelid surgery can be performed together at the same time.

What to do about dark circles under my eyes?

Dark circles can be treated if they are the result of fatty swelling or pockets. If the dark circles are the result of pigment changes in the skin of the eyelids, chemical peels can improve this coloring.
