Otoplasty: cosmetic surgery for protruding ears and lobes

Cosmetic ear surgery is a facial cosmetic surgery procedure that corrects the position, shape and symmetry of the ears.

The correction of protruding ears requires a surgical procedure called otoplasty. The operation is usually bilateral but can sometimes be unilateral.

Otoplasty corrects the cartilage abnormalities in the auricle that cause the “protruding” appearance of the ear. Three types of malformations can be distinguished:

  • First of all an angulation too important between the pavilion of the ear and the skull carrying out the true “detachment”.
  • Then an excessive size of the cartilage of the concha projecting the ear towards the front.
  • Finally a defect of folding of the usual reliefs of the cartilage which makes that the auricle is like “unfolded”.

This information sheet was written by Dr ABBOU who is a plastic surgeon in Paris.

Dr. ABBOU and Dr. PESSIS are specialized in cosmetic surgery and regularly perform both cosmetic and reconstructive ear surgery.

What is otoplasty or ear surgery?

Ear surgery or otoplasty aims to obtain symmetrical ears of natural size and appearance. Most of the time, the correction is considered in childhood and can be performed from the age of 7, as soon as the child expresses the desire to do so.

What are the objectives?

The goals of ear surgery are:

  • Treatment of protruding ears
  • Symmetrization of the ears
  • Improving ear folds

Who is it for?

The surgery of protruding ears is intended for patients with protruding and non-symmetrical ears who are embarrassed in their daily life.

What are the dangers?

They are rare but must be mentioned:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Recurrence

What is the procedure?

Before the intervention

Two cosmetic surgery consultations to analyze your ears and define a surgical strategy adapted to your case.

Course of the operation

Otoplasty is performed in the operating room under local or general anesthesia.

Each surgeon adopts his or her own technique, which is adapted to each case to obtain the best results.
First, the incisions are made in the retroauricular fold, the natural fold behind the ear.

The skin is then peeled away if necessary to access the cartilage.  Finally, the auricle is returned to its correct position and secured with deep stitches.

Post-operative care

The pain is usually moderate. The first bandage is removed the next day. The patient will wear a protective bandage (like a “tennis bandage”) for a few weeks, then only at night for a few more weeks. The ears may then appear swollen, the reliefs being masked by the edema (swelling). More or less important bruises are sometimes present, which is normal. This eventual appearance should not worry you: it is only temporary and does not compromise the final result.

A delay of one to two months is necessary to appreciate the final result. In most cases, the operation will have effectively corrected the anomalies present and obtained ears that are normally positioned and oriented, well folded, symmetrical, and of natural size and appearance. In the vast majority of cases, the results are definitive.
All in all, this procedure effectively corrects the unsightly appearance of protruding ears. It also puts an end to the frequent mockery or derogatory remarks that can be the cause of school conflicts or psychological difficulties.

What are the prices?

From 2000 €

The rate may vary depending on the complexity of the surgery.

The questions most often asked by patients

The minimum age for ear surgery is 6-7 years. The child must request the procedure, not the parents.
