Surgery for basal cell carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma is a common skin cancer. There are 3 forms of basal cell carcinoma:

-Nodular or pearly pearl: firm to the touch and with hyper vascularization

-Superficial: scaly skin patch

-Scleroderma: hard superficial plaque

The treatment of basal cell carcinoma is based on surgery.

Dr. Ralph ABBOU and Dr. Rachel PESSIS are specialized in reconstructive plastic surgery and collaborate with the multidisciplinary consultation meeting of the Tenon Hospital in Paris to analyze the cases that require it.

What is basal cell carcinoma?

Basal cell carcinoma is a skin cancer that appears most often on sun-exposed areas: face and neck, but it can affect any area of the body.
Most often, basal cell carcinoma appears as a skin growth or a wound that does not heal.

What is the treatment for basal cell carcinoma?

  • Surgical removal of the lesion (removal of the carcinoma)
  • Reconstruction of the loss of substance after removal of the tumor from the skin
  • Histological analysis of the removed lesion in the laboratory

Who should be treated for basal cell carcinoma ?

Basal cell carcinoma surgery is intended for all patients with a suspicious skin lesion who are referred by their dermatologist, their general practitioner or who consult us spontaneously.

How is your care in dermatological surgery?

Before the procedure:

Medical consultation for plastic and aesthetic surgery

Anesthesia consultation if necessary.

Biopsy of the lesion if there is a diagnostic doubt or examination with the fotofinder: dermoscopy assisted by artificial intelligence.

Course of the intervention:

The lesion is removed surgically with safety margins. When removing a malignant tumor, a safety margin is required. The tumor is then sent to the laboratory for pathological analysis to confirm the diagnosis and ensure that the lesion has been completely removed: healthy resection margins.

Post-operative care

  • The postoperative period is not painful. You will be prescribed care depending on the technique used.
  • The scar will evolve over a year, and will fade over time.
  • The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia, local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia depending on the importance of the procedure.
