Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) treatment

The treatment of excessive sweating is a frequent treatment in dermatological and aesthetic surgery.

Hyper sweating is excessive sweating. This condition is not serious and affects mainly the armpits, feet and hands, and usually occurs during childhood.

It can lead to pathologies or have negative effects on social life. Hyper perspiration can lead to the need to shower and change clothes several times a day. This discomfort can be the cause of withdrawal, contributing to the eventual appearance of anxiety or even depression.

In general, there is no cause identified with certainty (this is why we also speak of “primary hypersudation”). However, there are often certain triggers (strong emotions, stress, hot weather, consumption of spicy food and/or alcohol).

This medical information sheet was written in July 2020 by Dr. ABBOU and Dr. PESSIS who are cosmetic surgeons in Paris.

Dr. ABBOU and Dr. PESSIS practice very regularly the treatment of perspiration in dermatological surgery as well as in reconstructive surgery.

What is the procedure?

Before the treatment :

  • Medical consultation with the plastic surgeon
Medical consultation with an endocrinologist to rule out a medical cause for the hyper-perspiration.

Course of treatment:

First of all, aesthetic medicine allows, thanks to botulinum toxin or botox injections, to treat hypersweating in first intention. Botulinum toxin or botox is used to treat hyperperspiration by reducing the production of sweat in the sweat glands.

The effect is very satisfactory in cases of moderate hyperperspiration. Botox injections are performed at the doctor’s office. The results appear after an average of three days and last for about six months.

The procedure is simple. In case of failure of botulinum toxin or botox injections, your plastic surgeon can propose a surgical procedure that will treat the axillary hyperhidrosis in a radical way.

Definitive surgical treatment of sweating

This surgical procedure called axillary hyperhidrosis cure concerns patients with very important sweating and who have tried unsuccessfully the treatment with botulinum toxin or Botox.

The operation against sweating consists of the elective destruction of the sweat glands located in the axillary hollow, exactly in the area where the hairs are located. This destruction is safe, because it removes only a few sweat glands and in a limited area. In addition, this operation against axillary hyperhidrosis often has the advantage of also destroying the hair bulbs and thus preventing hair growth.

Finally, it allows the problem to be resolved permanently. The surgical procedure is performed under local anesthesia or sedation.

A discreet scar remains in the armpit. The result is immediate and lasts a lifetime.

The suites

The after-effects are simple and the pain is moderate. The final results are appreciated about 10 to 15 days after the treatment.
