Mole surgery

Mole surgery is a very common dermatological surgical procedure that allows superficial skin lesions to be treated and analyzed.

The surgical treatment of moles is most often performed under local anesthesia.

The post-operative course is simple and you can resume your activities the same day or the next day.

This medical information sheet was written in July 2021 by Dr. Ralph ABBOU and Dr. Rachel PESSIS who are cosmetic surgeons in Paris. Dr. ABBOU and Dr. PESSIS regularly perform skin lesion surgery in cosmetic and reconstructive dermatology.

What is mole surgery?

The surgery of skin tumors includes the treatment of superficial skin lesions

These tumors are not serious, and the only reasons to remove them are either a doubt about their nature, or a discomfort related to their location or size (notably a lesion of the skin that grows, for example, a lesion that rubs against clothing), or an aesthetic reason.

 What are the objectives?

  • remove superficial skin lesions
  • reconstructing the loss of substance after removal of the skin tumor
  • aesthetic treatment with minimal scarring of the moles
  • histological laboratory analysis of the removed lesion

Who is it for?

Skin tumor surgery is for all patients who wish to have troublesome skin lesions removed and for patients who are referred by their dermatologist for treatment of a skin lesion.

How is your care in dermatological surgery?

Before the procedure:

Medical consultation for plastic and aesthetic surgery

Anesthesia consultation if necessary.

Course of the intervention:

The lesion is removed without prior biopsy. When a benign tumor is removed, no safety margin is required and the procedure is performed as close to the edges of the lesion as possible to achieve the most aesthetic result. The benign tumor is then sent to the laboratory for pathological analysis as a precaution.

Post-operations

  • The postoperative period is not painful. You will be prescribed care depending on the technique used.
  • The scar will evolve over a year, and will fade over time.
  • The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia, local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia depending on the importance of the procedure.

The questions most often asked by patients

How to know if a mole is dangerous ?

It is necessary to consult your dermatologist in order to detect potentially dangerous moles. There is the foto finder system that we use which allows us to detect all the moles on the body at once thanks to a dermatoscopy system coupled with artificial intelligence.

How moles appear

The appearance of a mole or nevus depends mainly on melanocytes, cells that produce melanin. Moles appear after the multiplication of melanocytes in an area following sun exposure. However, it is possible to have new moles without having been exposed to the sun.

What causes a lipoma?

Lipomas are balls of fat under the skin that appear spontaneously or following a shock. There are also familial forms: lipomatosis.

Can lipomas disappear spontaneously?

Except in exceptional cases, lipomas do not disappear spontaneously and must be surgically removed.

Can a lipoma hurt?

Lipomas are usually not painful. If the lipoma is painful, it may need to be removed surgically.
