Blepharoplasty: treating drooping eyelids

Upper blepharoplasty is a type of cosmetic eyelid surgery that treats drooping eyelids (hereditary or due to age).

An upper blepharoplasty reduces the signs of aging of the eyelids:

  • Palpebral ptosis: sagging eyelids
  • Congenital ptosis
  • Lipoptosis: sagging of eyelid fat

It replaces the “tired” look of the eyes with a more rested and relaxed appearance. It also opens up the eyes by subtly correcting the excess skin on the upper eyelids.

This information sheet was written by Dr. ABBOU and Dr. PESSIS who are two cosmetic surgeons in Paris who regularly perform eyelid surgery and particularly drooping eyelid surgery.

What is the operating procedure in our Paris office?

Before the surgery

Two consultations with your plastic surgeon to analyze your eyes and plan your operation.

Before the operation, it is advisable to consult an ophthalmologist in order to make a preoperative assessment and a visual field.

Process of the operation

Each surgeon adopts his or her own upper blepharoplasty technique. He adapts it to each case to obtain the best results. The skin incisions are hidden in the palpebral crease. The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia in the operating room. The patient will be able to close his or her eyes during this surgical procedure, which is very painless.

In some cases, the treatment of drooping eyelids will also include an endoscopic brow lift and brow lift that treats the eyelid lift muscles and the forehead muscles.

Post-operative care

There is no real pain, but there may be some discomfort with a feeling of tension in the eyelids, a slight irritation of the eyes or some visual disturbances. During the first few days, you should rest as much as possible and avoid any violent effort. The post-operative period is essentially marked by the appearance of edema (swelling), ecchymosis (bruising) and tearing.

During the first few days, it is sometimes impossible to close the eyelids completely. You should not be concerned about these signs, which are usually quickly reversible.

The stigmata of the operation will gradually fade, allowing a return to a normal social and professional life after a few days (6 to 20 days depending on the case). The scars may remain a little pink during the first few weeks, but their make-up is quickly authorized (usually from the 7th day).

A delay of 3 to 6 months is necessary to really appreciate the result. This is the time needed for the tissues to regain their suppleness and for the scars to fade as much as possible. The operation will most often have corrected the sagging skin, thus rectifying the aged and tired appearance of the eyes.
