Ethnic rhinoplasty is a plastic and aesthetic nasal surgery procedure to increase the projection and length of the nose and to reduce the width and thickness of the tip of the nose. Ethnic rhinoplasty is generally performed on patients of Asian, African and North African origin who have the following characteristics
For patients who do not wish to undergo surgery, it is possible to perform an ethnic medical rhinoplasty with hyaluronic acid injections.
This medical information sheet was written in June 2021 by Dr Ralph ABBOU who is a plastic surgeon in Paris specialized in primary, secondary and ethnic rhinoplasty.
Dr Ralph ABBOU defended his medical thesis on the subject of rhinoplasty and has published several scientific publications on the subject.
Dr Ralph ABBOU participates in several congresses per year in France and abroad in order to maintain and perfect his theoretical and technical skills.
Ethnic rhinoplasty is a type of rhinoplasty that corrects certain ethnic anatomical characteristics of certain populations, particularly patients of African or Asian origin. These patients wish to westernize their nose, that is to say, to obtain a thinner and longer nose or a more projected nose.
Often, these patients have very different noses from those of patients wishing to have a traditional rhinoplasty (treatment of the nasal hump and a long nose)
Most of these patients have a very different nasal anatomy unsuited to traditional rhinoplasty techniques.
Plastic surgery techniques in reconstructive rhinoplasty and secondary rhinoplasty have become more sophisticated and have been successfully applied to ethnic rhinoplasty in order to refine a flared nose and increase nasal projection. Ethnic rhinoplasty augmentation almost always requires cartilage grafts (ear or rib cartilage) to increase the structure of the nose.
Thus, ethnic surgery is an aesthetic procedure to modify the appearance of the nose to make it thinner and longer by increasing its structure in a person of African or Asian origin.
The objectives of ethnic rhinoplasty are to improve the appearance of the nose according to your request. It allows :
During your medical consultation, I also study the bridge of the nose, the distance to the upper lip and the general harmony of the face.
Ethnic rhinoplasty is for patients who wish to:
The surgeon combines traditional rhinoplasty techniques with reconstructive techniques based on the patient’s anatomical challenges and goals.
Ethnic rhinoplasty requires a broader range of surgical skills and techniques than traditional rhinoplasty.
The surgery takes two to three hours and is performed under general anesthesia in a clinic. Depending on the patient’s characteristics and aesthetic goals, an ethnic rhinoplasty may involve lifting the nasal bridge to increase nasal projection, removing a hump, narrowing wide or flared nostrils and nostril wings, and refining the tip of the nose.
The nose can also be enlarged and lengthened. Cartilage grafts are typically used to build up the nasal architecture to be stronger and more defined. I prefer to use a cartilage graft taken from the ear cartilage or the septum. If a large amount of cartilage is needed, I take cartilage from the ribs. I never use nasal implants or silicone nasal prostheses, which are sometimes used in Asian rhinoplasty for nose reshaping, because they present a high risk of future complications because they are not incorporated into the tissues of the nose.
I perform ethnic rhinoplasty through an open approach, which allows me to safely modify and augment the structure of the nose and perform cartilage grafts precisely for the augmentation of the nose structure. The scar is not visible because it is very discreet and located under the nose.
In practice, your result will improve gradually over a year. The first results are visible between 1 and 3 months after the operation.

The rates for ethnic rhinoplasty depend on the complexity of your case and the type of hospitalization.
There is no social security coverage for ethnic rhinoplasty.
Ethnic rhinoplasty is difficult because of the thickness of the skin and the structure of the bone and cartilage.
The best ethnic rhinoplasty surgeon in Paris will be the one who will take the time to precisely elaborate your project and who often performs this type of surgery.
Some patients who seek ethnic rhinoplasty seek to preserve their ethnic characteristics, while others wish to minimize them.
No choice is right or wrong. Only the patient knows which nose is best for him or her and patient satisfaction should always be the ultimate goal.
Thanks to computer imaging, nasal photographs can be modified and cosmetic preferences can now be determined more accurately, but beware that simulating or morphing the nose does not guarantee the result.
Done properly, an ethnic rhinoplasty enhances the beauty not only of your nose but also of your face, placing your facial features in better harmony. Rhinoplasty patients may find that their new nose increases their confidence. The surgery can address both aesthetic desires and functional issues, such as making breathing easier.
